What to notice
- δόγμα means “decree” here, and gives us dogma. Originally it just meant something that had been decided.
- πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην means “all the inhabited world”. Οἰκουμένη is the source of the English word ecumenical.
- Καίσαρος Αὐγούστου is “of Caesar Augustus”. Luke places the story in world history straight away, and these are Latin names in Greek letters.
