The writing on the wall, in Aramaic
At a drunken feast in Babylon, a hand appears and writes on the palace wall. No one can read it until Daniel is sent for. This is where English gets “the writing on the wall” and “weighed in the balances and found wanting”, and the original is in Aramaic.

What to notice
- מְנֵא מְנֵא תְּקֵל וּפַרְסִין is “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin”. Many scholars think these were names of weights, roughly “a mina, a mina, a shekel and half-minas”, which would explain why nobody understood them.
- תְּקֵל תְּקִילְתָּה בְמֹאזַנְיָא means “Tekel: you are weighed in the balances”. Daniel reads each weight as a verb, and this pun is the whole trick of the scene.
- וְהִשְׁתְּכַחַתְּ חַסִּיר means “and are found wanting”. Just two Aramaic words, still in common use in English after more than 400 years.
- פְּרֵס is “Peres”, read as “divided”. It also sounds like וּפָרָס, “and Persia”, the people who will take the kingdom, and that is the final pun.
