What to notice
- קוּם לֵךְ means “arise, go”. Two sharp commands open the story, and Jonah's reaction is to do neither.
- תַּרְשִׁישָׁה means “towards Tarshish”. The -ה at the end means “to” or “towards”, a small ending that replaces a whole English word.
- וַיֵּרֶד יָפוֹ means “he went down to Joppa”. The verb “go down” keeps coming back: to the port, into the ship, and further. It is how the story shows him sinking long before the fish.
