Genesis 1 in Hebrew: “In the beginning”
The first chapter of the Bible is written in plain, patterned prose. The same phrases come round again for each day of creation, so by the third day you are reading words you've already met. It is one of the classic places to start reading Hebrew.

What to notice
- בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים means “in the beginning God created”. Notice the order: the verb comes first, then the subject. This is normal in Biblical Hebrew.
- אֱלֹהִים ends in -im, the usual plural ending, yet it takes a singular verb when it means the God of Israel. It is one of the first puzzles every student meets.
- תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ means “formless and empty”. It is a rhyming pair, and English once borrowed it as “tohu-bohu”, meaning chaos.
- וַיְהִי־ עֶרֶב וַיְהִי־ בֹקֶר means “there was evening and there was morning”, the refrain that closes each day. Evening comes first, which is why the Jewish day begins at sunset.
